NMIT-Share and Care

I always wanted to write something about the placement experience that i had during my final and pre final year B.E, thanks to Mr. V. N. Kulkarni,Head, Training & Placement,NMIT for implementing this idea of Share and Care. My intention of sharing is not just giving some tips for getting through the interview, I am sure u can search those in Google. What exactly I aim to share, is the state of mind of that student on the day of placement, who’s going to switch from learning to earning mode in life.

I can relate the placement day situation to a typical Cow festival in villages, where in lots of well domesticated Cows (here we the trained engineers) are sold (placed) in market according to their quality and ability. Later the cow works for the master throughout the life, hence Lesson#1-Identify your master ( your company) well, so do your homework before- have a good study about the company. Make sure where u want to be after 5 or 10 years, so plan.

I remember Infosys was my first attempt, and the day before the interview I could hardly sleep, My far relatives cousin had got through it, it was expected from them that, I should also be able to make it, I did visit temples, read about Narayan Murthys biodata did all stuff ( Now I laugh at those moments) to get some courage and confidence, but unfortunately I couldn’t make it,so

Lesson#2- Don’t be nervous or don’t get under any mental pressure about getting through. so on the day Just relax, be what you are and be confidant. Getting placed is all act of situation on that day so be alert and grasp well.

Generally the selection process consists of following rounds

1.Aptitude Round (quant, reasoning, and English, our friend R S Aggarwal makes our life tough by releasing new edition aptitude books every year, just keep a eye on tactics, and be cool with fundamentals, u Can crack it, Don’t worry if u don’t like solving puzzles or quant, intelligent guessing can also work provided negative marking is not there. Praying god helps here J)

2. Group discussion: my mantra to crack GD is simple “Halla Bol “ ( meaning declare war-but Diplomatically) just keep banging right sentences at right time. Don be under assumption that one who starts and ends wins, you never know, however if u r confidant of subject take the lead and start. Dont worry if u don’t know anything about the given topic, In one of the GD I attended, I never understood what was the topic, I could grasp something from one who started then later I grasped the matter and followed my mantra. Always try to quote examples to your points, also listen to other points and try finding their faults. If you are not a good listener, you can do some acting over there( not recommended but helps to put you in safer side), after all in 20 to 40 min discussion would end up in a fish market only.

3.Technical Round: Once you cleared GD, wait like the hero in the movie Gladiator waits behind the closed doors, before final fight, u don’t know where is the trap out there. This is a disaster round for those weak in their subjects, but if handled carefully u can crack it, Its very important to have high confidence at this point, if u fail to answer first few questions don’t jump to conclusion that u lost, if u feel low, think that on that day U ARE THE BEST PERSON ON EARTH TO BE EMPLOYED and go ahead, Google few probable questions in few websites given before. In one of the technical interview round, I attended, went for nearly 45min and that company person almost killed me with deadly questions, if you don’t know the answer, just don’t say u no directly, think for a while (blink your eyelashes, hit your memory) atleast you may be rewarded for trying to think, Don’t be in hurry to come out of the interview room. Be cool and if u get a question which u are sure of answering then just spend maximum time explaining,” read your CV well and you can actually make him ask what you want to answer”.

4.HR round; Don’t take it lightly or granted offer, chances of making a fool of yourself is high here, questions like tell about yourself are common, be prepared- never finish by saying u are Mr xyz and you have come to attend interview!!, even they know u have come for interview, tell about ur family ( need not mention your girlfriends or boyfriends J, believe me some people are so prompt) , your place, hobbies, your passion, and what makes you different from others? your strengths, weakness should be given a thought before. Generally on campus company wont ask you expected salary, if they do just say” as per company policy” don’t guess if you don’t have idea about your package, you may end up selling yourself cheaply.

Well once you are done with all rounds, come out and relax, and let them do their work. If you are the class topper then don’t be overconfident about that in placement scenario, I have seen toppers of my batch still in need of their first offer, In placements everybody has equal opportunities, so make sure u meet eligibility criteria and rest is just left to you. I can say that Aptitude round is of prime importance, so prepare well, once you are through aptitude rest is just your communication skills.

If You are selected then its your good luck else always remember its companies bad luck that they missed a worthy candidate like you. so never feel bad if u don’t make it. Jjust keep going ,and Rocking!!!

Wish you all good luck

Cheers

Sainath
